Savannah Youth Ambassador (SYA) is an intensive leadership training institute for high school students living in Savannah, Georgia. SYA is a no-cost program sponsored by the City of Savannahs Citizen Office and Community Planning and Development Department that serves 50 youth per year. The mission of SYA is to provide Savannahs youth with training, community resources, and guidance to increase their knowledge of self, build their personal capacity for leadership, and to foster civic engagement within Savannahs communities. This mission is fulfilled through a variety of hands-on training sessions covering such topics as democratic decision making, active listening, diversity, environmental sustainability, and social media. Youth visit a variety of local neighborhoods, businesses, cultural and civic institutions to get to know what is going on in their City. Finally, SYA participants work in teams to research, design, coordinate and implement Make a Difference (M.A.D.) community impact projects.
