ITEST-Alabama is a NSF funded project designed to promote interest in computer science among high school girls and minority students attending schools in Alabamas Black Belt areas. During the Summer Academy, computer science faculty at Tuskegee University provide lectures on basic computer concepts including software engineering, network security, and computer hardware. Students also learn how to use MIT App Inventor by reviewing the basics of coding and app development. Each week, students have an opportunity to meet Black professionals who are working in the field of computing or education. Guest speakers share the benefits of working in the computing field and tips for exploring future careers and college admission. After students learn the basics of computing, students are engaged in a group project where they explore a community need and come up with an app that can help solve the identified problem. Each group designs an app wireframe and develop an app using MIT App Inventor.
