Central Louisiana Area Health Education Center

The A-HEC of a Summer program is an exciting opportunity for ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade students with at least a 2.0 GPA who are interested in pursuing a healthcare career. These students are given a chance to explore different career opportunities in medicine by volunteering at local hospitals. During the fifteen-day period in June, the students rotate through various hospital departments and job shadow practicing healthcare professionals. They are able to obtain first hand knowledge about a variety of healthcare fields, learn about health issues and patient care, gain CPR certification and practice taking vital signs, attend interactive workshops, and participate in field trips.

M.A.S.H. is a FREE summer program offering high school students an opportunity to experience different health careers through participation in hands on activities and class lectures at LSU Alexandria. Courses include Introduction to the Health Care System (HESC 1003) and Client Care Interactions (HESC 1004) which are directed by the LSU Alexandria Allied Health Department. Students will learn about various health care professions and the team approach using all learned high school sciences in different settings like laboratories, crime scenes, emergency room scenarios, malpractice trials, and more.

The CI: Healthcare program is open to tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students with at least a 2.5 GPA. The program is an activity-filled day that offers students who have an interest in health careers the opportunity to explore nursing and a variety of allied health careers at Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University (FRAN-U) in Baton Rouge or the LSU-Alexandria campus. Highly technical activities during the one-day event aid participants in their search for a future in healthcare.

The Day with the Doctors program is open to eleventh and twelfth grade students with at least a 3.0 GPA. The program gives students the opportunity to spend a day at the LSU Health Shreveport or New Orleans or Tulane School of Medicine campuses. Students learn about medical problems, work with specimens and microscopic slides, practice basic life support techniques, explore the anatomy and/or pathology labs, interact with medical students and faculty, and receive medical school admissions information and more.
